Collaborative Approach to Hosting National Championships

Announcement of 2025 AON New Zealand Pool Rescue Championships

We are pleased to share that we have worked collaboratively with Surf Lifesaving NZ and the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland to stage a big week of national championships in September 2025.

With our previous announcement of dates and venues for the 2025 NZ Short Course Swimming Championships to be held on 21 - 25 September, Surf Lifesaving NZ are now pleased to announced they will deliver their 2025 AON New Zealand Pool Rescue Championships immediately after.

Following the completion of our Competition Review earlier this year, the organisations worked together when planning the dates for short course to be at the start of the first week of school holidays, to enable the pool championships to be held in the days following over the weekend.

This highlights the two aquatic sport organisations working together with a host facility when aligning their calendars for 2025. Some equipment will be used across both championships, whilst the facility will work promptly to transform the pool to host the pool championships.

Surf Lifesaving NZ's National Sport Manager, Lewis McClintock, is pleased to confirm the championship dates for next year.

"After the success of this year's pool champs which featured new major partner AON as the first ever naming rights partner, with 32 NZ Records broken and continued growth in competitor numbers, we are stoked to have our dates locked in for 2025."

McClintock is also looking forward to strengthening the collaboration between the two organisations.

"We are excited to be working more closely with the competition team at Swimming NZ in setting our calendar, and find efficiencies and benefits for the delivery of both championships."

Swimming NZ's Head of Participation, Competitions & Engagement, Dale Johnson, sees this as a win for those swimmers who will be looking to participate in both championships.

"We know that there is a large number of our swimmers who also participate in Surf Lifesaving competitions, so it's great to ensure the calendars align."

Johnson is thrilled to promote more opportunities for swimmers to race in competitions, with Surf Lifesaving NZ not requiring participants to be a qualified lifeguard to race at their pool championships.

"We see this as an opportunity for our swimmers to get involved in Surf Lifesaving competitions, which is a win for our members and a great way to continue growing the pool champs. We encourage all our swimmers at short course to consider adding a few more days of racing to their plans in the September school holidays next year."

Thanks to the team at Surf Lifesaving NZ and the team at AUT Millennium for working together and bringing this to life. We have provided the key details below.
