Competition Update - Major Regional Champs Locked In

Announcement of Upcoming Major Regional Championships on the Calendar

As part of continuing to implement the recommendations from the Competition Review held earlier this year, we are excited to confirm the upcoming major regional championships scheduled for the next 12 months.

The confirmation of these championships is another positive step forward for the delivery of the competition pathway across the country. With the recommendation focused on ensuring the separation of major regional championships on the calendar and emphasising their role as an important stepping stone towards national championships on the competition pathway, it is exciting to be able to confirm that this has been achieved ahead of the first year.

By separating these major regional championships to different weekends, it provides more significant racing opportunities for clubs and swimmers to participate in as part of their development while also aiding those aspiring to and preparing for the national championships. We encourage clubs to consider utilising these major regional championships as team trips across the cycle of long and short course seasons.

We have defined major regional championships as those held in the larger regions or those with facilities capable of hosting national championships.

Whilst we are announcing the dates and venues for the major regional championships today, we would like to remind the community that all regional championships remain an important step in the competition pathway. Given the number of regions across the country, it remains incredibly challenging to have all regional championships separated entirely. You'll see some overlap occasionally, but overall it is great to see more major opportunities for swimmers to race across the season.

Swimming NZ's Head of Participation, Competitions & Engagement, Dale Johnson, is grateful for the collaboration across the major regions during the planning phase.

"Thanks to each of the regions for being open to discussion and working together to help rollout this recommendation from the Competition Review. It's a reflection of the positive steps forward we are collectively making to provide more opportunities for swimmers across the country."

The calendar of major regional championships has been outlined below. Please visit the respective region's website for the competition information and more details.
