Event Announcement for the 2024 Orangetheory NZ Open Water Swimming Championships and Partnership with Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series
We are stoked to announce the date for the 2024 Orangetheory NZ Open Water Swimming Championships. The event will be held on Saturday 13 January once again in the beautiful Lake Taupo.
In exciting news, these championships will be held within the Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series for the first time. It promises to be a great celebration of open water swimming, with the country’s largest open water series hosting their first event in Lake Taupo held within one day.
Following a few years of hosting the NZ and Zonal Secondary School Open Water Swimming Championships within the Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series, we are excited to partner with the whole series as part of our focus of getting more people swimming more often.
SNZ’s Head of Participation & Events, Dale Johnson, says this is an excellent move for our sport.
“We are stoked about partnering with the Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series and hosting the 2024 Orangetheory NZ Open Water Swimming Championships within one of their series races in Taupo. We want to support everyone having a positive experience in the water, and partnering with the series is a great way to engage with the wider swimming community.”
Johnson also believes this will see the public Epic Swim legacy continue.
“It’s great to be able to continue the Epic Swim for the public as part of the Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series moving forward. We have seven swimmers who have participated in all 14 swims since 2010, so we can’t wait to be back again in 2024.”
The Event Director for the Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series, Jason Herriman, is excited about the partnership.
“Working closer with Swimming New Zealand over the last few years has helped us realise how closely tied our long-term missions really are. They are equally as passionate about seeing new people enjoying our waterways safely as we are, and sometimes it’s easy to forget that they are so much more than just high-perfomance sport. Hopefully, using our collective reach, we will be able to welcome new athletes of all ages and abilities.”
As part of the partnership, Swimming NZ will support all 9 races across the series as part of our goal to promote open water swimming. New Zealand has some of the most iconic and beautiful swimming holes, so we are proud to be supporting the open water swimming community.
Entries for all series races will open today with the calendar announcement. Entries for the 2024 Orangetheory NZ Open Water Swimming Championships will close on Sunday 7 January, and we hope to see our biggest group of club swimmers part of the event.
