Get Active in the Water to Unlock Your Greatness

Launching Our Summer Awareness Campaign

We are thrilled to launch our “Unlock Your Greatness” awareness campaign for the second consecutive summer.

This summer's campaign aims to inspire Kiwis to get active in the water safely, with the start of summer being the perfect time to take a dip.

New Zealand is a nation surrounded by water, therefore learning to swim is not just a valuable skill - it is an essential one that promotes safety, health and wellbeing, and opens doors to a wide range of opportunities in and around the water. Swimming provides so many benefits that reach far beyond the water, and it is so much more than just a sport, it is a favourite Kiwi pastime that everyone should enjoy throughout their life.

Our "Unlock Your Greatness" campaign aims to spread awareness about:

  • The importance of swimming as a life skill

  • The health and wellbeing benefits associated with swimming

  • Swimming's role as a gateway to other opportunities in and around the water

We have provided more details about the key messages of the campaign below.

Learning to swim is the most valuable life skill

There is no greater gift than helping someone learn to swim, as learning to swim is one of the most valuable life skills one can learn. Not only does it open up unlimited opportunities in and around the water, but it is a skill that saves lives. The ability to swim plays a crucial role in personal safety, health, and confidence.

Swimming is a skill that can be learned at any stage of life, and it is never too early or too late to start.

This element of our "Unlock Your Greatness" campaign has been designed to support families to find the Swim Schools located around the country. Swim Schools play an integral role in facilitating the development of this crucial life skill, so we are helping connect the community with their local provider through our "Find Your Local Swim School" function on our website.

There are endless health and wellbeing benefits to being active in the water

The list of benefits associated with being active in the water are endless. You may swim for competition, fitness, enjoyment, rehabilitation, or other reasons, but swimming provides unlimited health and wellbeing benefits.

Swimming is one of the best forms of physical activity as it is a whole-body, low-impact exercise. Being active in the water is something you can participate in for life, so it's never too late to start or return. Given that the benefits extend far beyond the water, there is no time like the present to experience them.

This element of the campaign aims to connect Kiwis with aquatic facilities, providers of aquatic activities and providers of aquatic sports. We have developed a "Find Your Local Pool" function on our website as one way to assist.

If you've got some favourite swimming holes around the country or you're part of a group/squad that swims together regularly, we'd love to help others find and join you. Please complete our short survey so we can add to our website.

Swimming's Role as a Gateway to Other Opportunities In and Around the Water

By learning to swim, you're unlocking a wealth of opportunities to be active in and around the water. To safely enjoy outdoor activities or sports such as sailing, wakeboarding, surfing, or triathlon, it is crucial to learn to swim. Likewise, to safely enjoy indoor aquatic activities or sports such as diving, water polo or underwater hockey, you need to have learnt to swim first. Swimming is a gateway to a lifelong love of, and involvement with, the water.

This element of the campaign has been designed to showcase the unlimited opportunities that are a result of learning to swim.

Swimming NZ’s Chief Executive, Steve Johns, believes the campaign will help Kiwis to be more active in the water for life.

“Swimming is an investment in your health, safety and personal growth. We know that swimming possesses so many benefits, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and increased quality of sleep. There are endless benefits to swimming – I encourage all Kiwis to get active in the water safely this summer.”

Swimming NZ’s Head of Participation, Competitions & Engagement, Dale Johnson, believes that everyone can Unlock Their Greatness in and around the water.

"Whether you're learning to blow bubbles in the water for the first time, swimming for your fitness or mental health, training for a competition or just want to spend more time in the water, everyone can Unlock Their Greatness. No matter what your motivation, we want to celebrate the world of endless opportunities that come when people are active in the water."

Johnson added that learning to swim is the crucial first step.

"We are fortunate to live in an island nation with stunning waterholes and surrounded by water. To enjoy a lifetime long of the water participating in whichever activities you enjoy the most, learning to swim is the most important life skill that can Unlock Your Greatness.”

We invite you to join us in spreading awareness about our key messages in our "Unlock Your Greatness" campaign. You can do so by checking out the digital assets provided on our "Get Involved" webpage and sharing with those around you.
