Announcement of our Updated Assessment Process for Officiating Pathway
We are pleased to share the next update in our development for technical officials as we update our process for assessments.
Since launching our new Technical Officials Pathway late last year, we have been working on bringing the pathway to life. With a focus on ensuring consistency and clarity, the roll-out of this standardised assessment process is another big step in delivering the pathway. You can learn more about the officiating pathway by clicking on the link below.
Following the launch of our online education modules last month, the next step has been to update our assessment processes to align with the new pathway. Recognising the need for clarity and consistency in the new officiating pathway, we brought the group assessors together for a workshop. This has formed the basis of assessment process, which will include a practical and theory assessment.
For those training to become an Inspector of Turns, this will include the online education, local training and practice before being assessed for your qualification. For Judge of Stroke, Starter and Referee positions, the online education modules are being developed to be integrated into this process when they are completed.
Assessments will be conducted by one of our thirteen volunteer assessors who are located around the country. We are working with our regions to have a calendar of when upcoming assessments will take place, where one of the assessors will be present at a competition, and they will liaise with our TO & Volunteer Development Lead (Carlrine Gillespie) to organise the upcoming assessment. Our Regional TACs will work on supporting training to help prepare each official for assessment.
Our volunteer assessors possess a wealth of knowledge and experience officiating, and we are grateful for their support of the officiating pathway. Thank you to each of them for their contribution to building the assessment process and for volunteering their time to support the officiating pathway. The volunteer assessors are:
Liz Agnew (Waikato)
Barry Ashcroft (Auckland)
Christine Cassin (Canterbury West Coast)
Ron Clarke (Canterbury West Coast)
Dianne Farmer (Manawatu)
Greg Forsythe (Wellington)
Jacqui Forsythe (Wellington)
Carlrine Gillespie (Northland)
Ross Gillespie (Northland)
Alan Hale (Otago)
Gavin Ion (Waikato)
Jo Russell (Canterbury West Coast)
Stu Woods (Waikato)
The new assessment process goes live today (Monday 18 November), meaning all new assessments will be conducted by our volunteer assessors listed above.
Swimming NZ's Technical Official & Volunteer Development Lead, Carlrine Gillespie, expressed her thanks to the volunteer assessors for their support.
"We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of our volunteer assessors. They have all been helpful and working as a collective to finalise the new processes for assessing."
Gillespie is excited to see the next step of the pathway come to life.
"It's great to have another key part of the new officiating pathway come to life. We believe this is a crucial step in achieving consistency across the country."
Gillespie took the opportunity to call for people to get involved at competitions as a technical official.
"There is no better time for someone to start learning how to be an official. The best seat in the house is being part of the action and our community is ready to welcome you and support your growth."
