Open Water Officials Going Swimmingly

Selections to the World Aquatics Open Water List #15

We are excited to congratulate four Technical Officials from New Zealand have been appointed to the World Aquatics Open Water Officials List #15. Congratulations to Ross Gillespie (Northland), Celia Honiss (Northland), Debra Mahony (Waikato) and Paul Matson (Wellington) on your selection, with a special mention to Celia and Debra for this being the first time they have been selected at this level.

We would also like to congratulate Swimming NZ Life Member, John West (Auckland), on his appointment as honourary secretary of the World Aquatics Technical Swimming Committee (TSC). John has been heavily involved in delivering FINA Open Water events and is very deserving of this recognition.

FINA Open Water Certification School for Officials

This group were part of twelve NZ officials who completed the FINA Open Water Certification School in Dargaville. The two-day course was delivered by World Aquatics OW TSC member Bill Ford and focused on enhancing the skill and knowledge of Open Water officiating. The weekend received outstanding feedback from those whom attended, for both the quality of the sessions and the social opportunity to connect outside of the school.

Officiating Development Abroad

As part of our dedication to supporting opportunities for technical officials to develop abroad, we have Ross and Celia officiating at the 2023 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships this weekend in Busselton, Western Australia. This has been supported through Prime Minister’s Scholarship funding and will help them with preparation for appointments to World Aquatics events as part of their selection on OW List #15. We wish them well and look forward to hearing about their experience.
