Summer Swim Challenge in the South Island

Can we swim every lake in the South Island this summer?

A summer challenge has been laid down in the South Island by the Southern Lakes Swim Club. They have set out to swim in every lake throughout the South Island between Christmas 2022 and 1 May 2023.

Paul Jaquin is one of the lead organisers of the challenge and has shared what motivated them to create the challenge.

We created the challenge to spread our wings a little further. We spend times looking at maps and photos of New Zealand, and just started wondering whether we could swim there.

Paul is one of many Kiwis who love to partake in open water swimming throughout the year.

To be out in the open water, especially in New Zealand, and amongst nature is one of the most exhilarating feelings in the world.

With some of the most stunning lakes in the water throughout the South Island, we think it's a great opportunity to get outdoors and visit some of these spots. Paul couldn't give a stronger recommendation of giving it a go either.

To get out and swim somewhere different, to make a journey and plan an adventure with a purpose is motivation enough. It's a chance to have fun with your friends, and to make some new ones.

Whilst there are some lakes around the South Island are tapu, let's join forces and try to complete all of the 344 lakes on the island that we can. It's a great way to celebrate the stunning location where we live and get outdoors to enjoy the Kiwi summer.

To get involved, check out their website and pledge your swim in each lake. Most importantly, remember to be safe in the open water.
