Virtus Oceania Games

The New Zealand delegation is thrilled with a fantastic first day of swimming at the Virtus Oceania Asia Games.

Lance Dustow (S19) who won 3 silver medals and a bronze described representing New Zealand:

“It’s amazing! It’s the best thing I could ever be a part of, left me in tears standing up there.”

Swimming New Zealand’s Disability and Para Swimming Participation Manager, Cameron Leslie, is with the team in Brisbane. He says there were tonnes of proud moments for New Zealand throughout Tuesday. One that stood out for him was the NZ Men’s II1 relay team, Cuda Tawhai-Hamilton, Jack Bugler, Denver Xavier and Asher Smith-Franklin winning bronze.

“I loved seeing Cuda, Jack, Denver and Asher winning bronze in the 4x50m freestyle relay. The team set a NZ record in the process, but more importantly supported each other and overcame the challenge.”

Day Four

New Zealand swimmers today brought the country's tally to 26 medals as they rounded out the swimming events in the Virtus Oceania Asia Games in Brisbane. The day also saw Personal Bests for many of the athletes and several New Zealand Records were broken in the S14 sports class. Finn Russ (S19) was glad to collect another silver medal to add to 2 silvers and 2 bronze medals he had already won - even if he would have liked it to be gold. He raced the 50m butterfly in 30.29, a Personal Best.

"Today's race was the 50m fly. I was so close to getting a gold medal, but instead I got a silver medal." Speaking of the OA Games as a whole, Finn explains that a highlight has been meeting athletes from around the globe.

"I've had fun and gotten to meet new people - from here in Australia, some from China and Japan, some from Malaysia, one from Colombia and some from America."
