Youth Commonwealth Games Long List Named

40 swimmers and 10 coaches have been named on the Swimming New Zealand Long List for the 2023 Youth Commonwealth Games which will take place in Trinidad and Tobago from 4 – 11 August.

To be eligible for the Youth Commonwealth Games, swimmers must be born between 2006 – 2009 (females) and 2005 – 2008 (males) and swim a qualifying time at the 2023 Apollo Projects NZ Age Group Championships in the Hawke's Bay later this year.

Athletes who have been contacted and subsequently been named on the Long List had to meet the following criteria:

  • Being the closest to the SNZ World Junior selection time for both Individual and Relay events

  • For the females, the cut off is the WJC selection time plus 4%

  • For the males, the cut off is the WJC selection time plus 4.5%

  • Relay only swimmers have also been added

  • There are additional "Wild Card" athletes on both male and female to ensure a complete team should World Junior events take priority

Of the 40 athletes on the long list, 6 swimmers competed on the 2022 Junior Pan Pacs team in Honolulu, Hawaii, with a further 7 athletes competing under the National Age Program at the 2022 Queensland State Championships in December.

New Zealand has a strong history at the Youth Commonwealth Games with the last edition being in the Bahamas. The 2017 team produced an incredible 20 medals to place third on the medal table and included SNZ Aquablacks Lewis Clareburt, Mya Rasmussen, Zac Reid and Chelsey Edwards.
